Pump House Siding

Siding - 2012 ~ by Griz (aka Steve Stovner) ~
In 1995 (when I built the shop) T1-11 siding (19/32" exterior plywood with routed grooves) was $12 per sheet retail. I got 120 sheets for $5 per sheet because they were 2nds. But I got to pick and choose the panels I wanted. I rejected any that were delaminated or had major outside surface scars. The defects in the sheets I selected were either not detectable by me or minor planer chatter which is barely visible after painting and installation. The best price I found for T1-11 in July 2012 was $40.97 per sheet. So I settled for 3/8" OSB (looks like T1-11) siding at $24.68 per sheet for the pump house.

Siding panels and soffits received primer and 2 coats of high quality exterior latex prior to going out to the building site.

The complete rim of every siding sheet is bedded in 35 year latex caulk then screwed to the studs with 1-1/2" galvanized "drywall type" screws. Recessed screw heads were filled with caulk and touched up with paint. I ended up buying 6 tubes of caulk because I used up the last of my "lifetime supply" I bought at auction many years prior.

Add a door and some trim and you have a good looking building. Both the door and trim are from an auction buy over 15 years ago. This is one of the last doors, I've been saving it for the pump house, it is 36x80x2", wood frame, steel skin, closed cell foam filled.

Trish used to refer to that auction as "the day Griz went nuts at the auction". It took me 2 days and 4 trips with 3/4 ton pickup and 5 x 8 trailer to haul home all the new building materials I bought in 4 hours (spent less than $400). 2 trailer loads (springs almost bottomed out) were nothing but solid-core doors. Note: 600 sq ft of the shop apartment upstairs subfloor is solid wood-core doors. For 15 years I've been using new wood moulding (numerous shapes and sizes) for everything I can think of, and still have hundreds of full length pieces left.
